In the late 1930’s the Granite Falls Saturday night dances attracted many young folks from school. On Monday mornings the students would tell about the good time they’d had at the dance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During my freshman year Carl asked me to go with to the dance with him. I had to confess that I did not know how to dance but he assured me that his sisters would be along and would teach me the steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So I asked my mother for permission to go along. I received a very firm “NO.” Naturally I kept begging with hopes that she would change her mind. This did not happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She recalled how I had begged for a powder blue sweater at the Farmer Store earlier. So, in desperation she offered me the sweater if I would quit begging to go to the dance. How is that for being bought off?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Consequently, I never really learned how to dance save for the polka which I learned while teaching in the Glencoe Public School. Here the polka was standard at the Glencoe School Dances.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
